Would you rather play chords, riffs, or melodies?

Would you rather play chords, riffs, or melodies?

Jun 13, 2026

This was a question I recently asked in a poll on my YouTube channel.

I was curious because in my teaching experience, I've seen some students that are more focused on one of these above the others.

Let's talk a little about each one. (And I'm going to ask your opinion.)

Chords

Strumming chords while singing is one of the most common uses of guitar in popular music. For many students, this is a primary focus. For beginners, this can be a challenge at first because of the coordination required for the left hand.

Riffs

Riffs are recognizable guitar parts, often from introductions of songs. The fact that people usually know the song as soon as they hear a riff makes these fun. Many riffs only involve one note at a time, which makes them easier for the left hand for beginners.

Melodies

This is the tune of the song, which is usually sung rather than played on guitar. Nonetheless, many guitar students find enjoyment in playing the melody because it is so recognizable. And melodies involve only one note at a time in the left hand, making them easier for beginners.

In the poll I took on YouTube, guitar beginners said they most wanted to learn:

53% Chords

33% Riffs

14% Melodies

Which is your favorite?
