Why your chord playing sounds boring (and how to fix it)

Mar 28, 2026

Have you ever played through a chord progression and thought…

“This just sounds… kind of plain”?

You’re playing the right chords.
You’re in time.
Nothing is wrong.

But it still doesn’t sound as full or musical as you want it to.

I see this all the time with students.

Most players learn chords as fixed shapes, something you grab and strum. And while that works, it can also make your playing start to feel a little repetitive over time.

Here’s a key idea:

Chords don’t have to stay the same while you’re playing them.

Even a small change inside a chord can completely change how it feels. You can add tension, movement, or a more expressive sound with some small variations.

Most players just haven’t been shown how to do that yet.

I made a short video where I show you a simple way to take the chords you already know and make them sound more interesting and musical right away.

If your playing has ever felt a little flat or repetitive, I think this will help.

You can find the video here.
