Why Are Chord Switches So Hard?
Aug 01, 2026This is a struggle for many beginner guitarists.
Chord switches interrupt the music.
It seems impossible to keep the strumming steady because it takes so long for the fretting-hand fingers to find the next chord.
In my 27 years of guitar teaching, I have found this is not because a student lacks talent.
It's not because you don't practice enough, though more practice can help.
It's because you start with complicated skills and don't use simple approaches to build up to them.
In my new video, I show several simple approaches that have helped my beginner students make great progress in strumming a steady beat while switching chords.
You can watch it here.
Keep making music!
