What's really holding back your guitar progress?

What's really holding back your guitar progress?

Jul 04, 2026

We think a lot about what we want to learn on guitar.

The songs we want to play.

The chords, riffs, and melodies we enjoy.

That’s great!

But we don’t think as often about what’s holding us back.

I recently listened to a discussion of the Theory of Constraints. This is the idea that identifying the biggest bottleneck in a particular area and improving it is one of the best ways to make progress.

Every guitar player has one weakness that's limiting everything else. Until you improve that one thing, you get limited results.

I just released a new video called “The 5 BIGGEST beginner guitar mistakes (and how to fix them)”. I encourage you to check it out to see if any of these 5 things is holding you back.

Whether your constraint is one of these 5 things or something else, figuring out what it is and putting your energy into fixing it may be the best way to make faster progress in your guitar playing.

Keep making music!

People sometimes ask why I make music. I share a few thoughts here.
