The One Habit That Helps You Learn Guitar Faster

The One Habit That Helps You Learn Guitar Faster

Dec 20, 2025

You want to get better at guitar.

But you don't seem to make progress.

You’ve watched videos.

You’ve bought books.

You’ve tried courses.

All of those things can be helpful.

But none of them make you better at playing guitar unless you also have this habit:

Play Guitar Regularly.

I know this seems obvious, but so many people overlook it.

“But Sean, why does this matter so much?”

Imagine 2 guitar learners:

Joe plays guitar for 2.5 hours on a Saturday and then doesn’t play for two weeks.

Bill plays guitar 5 days a week, 15 minutes a day, for the same two weeks.

Based on my 26 years of guitar teaching experience, Bill wins.

This might seem surprising because they both played the same amount of time in two weeks.

What makes the difference?

Joe might see some progress in that long practice session, but he forgets most of it by the time he picks up the guitar 2 weeks later. Then he has to relearn the same things he learned before.

Bill learns a little bit. At night while he’s sleeping, his brain consolidates what he learned. The next day he plays better. This happens each day. The improvements compound.

If you want to develop one habit to improve your guitar playing, play 3-5 days a week.

EVERY week.

If you’re already doing this, great!

If not, try an experiment.

Play 3-5 days a week for just 2 weeks.

If you do, let me know how it went.

Keep making music!
