4 levels of playing a song

Oct 03, 2026

You want to play a certain song.

You're so excited to play it.

But you're just not sure you can.

As someone who has taught guitar for 27 years, I see this all the time.

One thing that helps is being aware of 4 levels of playing any song.

1. Easy

At this level, you simplify the song as much as necessary so you can play some part of it.

You play an easy riff from it.

You play easy versions of the chords.

You do all down strums instead of the original strum pattern.

For a beginner, this is a great place to start.

If you can play any part of the song simplified, celebrate!

You're playing the song!

2. Coffeehouse

At this level, you're still simplifying certain aspects of the song, but you're able to play chords and strumming throughout the song.

You (or someone else) could sing along with this version in a coffeehouse or open mic.

3. Recorded Version

At this level, you're seeking to play every aspect exactly as the guitarist on the recording played it.

You want to recreate every nuance of strumming, muting, sliding, rhythm, and so on.

4. Your Version

At this level, you're reimagining the song in a creative way that allows you to showcase your own interpretation.

You might think this would be easier than playing the recorded version, but to truly create a unique version, you need to develop the skill to play the recorded version so you have the skill to then mold the song to your own will.

When you think about a song you want to play, it's helpful to decide what level you want.

For many guitarists, the coffeehouse level is fulfilling, and they don't feel a need to go beyond that.

If that's you, great!

There's no need to feel guilty because you don't aspire to be a virtuoso.

Or maybe you hope to play the recorded version or create your own unique arrangement.

Whatever your ultimate goal, if you're a beginner, I recommend starting with the easy version.

Find satisfaction in playing the song simply.

Then, with time and practice, you can move up the levels.

Keep making music!
