How Do You Get Guitar Lessons Online?

How do you get guitar lessons online? An increasing number of people are looking for flexible options for guitar instruction.

While in-person guitar lessons are great, you may live in an isolated area where you don’t have a local guitar teacher. Or you may have a tight schedule and can’t seem to find a time to meet with the local guitar teacher.

You want the flexibility of having lessons that fit your schedule. Lessons you can access from wherever you are. You don’t want to take the time to drive to a guitar studio each week, possibly getting stuck in traffic along the way.

The good news is that you can find guitar instruction online in various ways.

Live Online Lessons

Some teachers offer guitar lessons via Skype or FaceTime. As long as the internet connection, camera, and mic of both student and teacher are adequate, this approach can work well. The advantage is that lessons are tailored to your individual needs, similar to an in-person private lesson. The disadvantage is the cost (often $2600 per year for an hour lesson each week) and the fact that you have to find a time that works for both student and teacher.

Online Courses

Some websites offer a prescribed course of guitar study through pre-recorded videos. The advantage is that these are available anytime day or night, and you can watch them again as many times as you want. The disadvantage is that these are not tailored to your individual needs.

Video Exchange Lesson Courses

Another option is video exchange lessons. In this approach, you send a video of your playing to the teacher, and the teacher replies with a video of instruction that responds individually to you. The advantage of this approach is that the videos are tailored to your particular needs. The videos are also available anytime day or night. And you can watch them as many times as you want. This is an approach to online guitar lessons that I find quite appealing.

I have looked into companies that offer video exchange lessons, and the one that has impressed me the most is ArtistWorks.

For classical guitarists, ArtistWorks has exclusive lessons with Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux. I subscribed to Jason Vieaux’s course through ArtistWorks. I enjoy how the content is organized in levels, so you can find content appropriate to your level and then move progressively to the next level. At each level, you can post a video of your playing and receive a video of Jason critiquing your playing.

You also have access to the videos that other users have posted and the responses Jason gave to those users. In that way, you may find your question answered already, and then you only need to ask for Jason to respond to you on a question no one has asked.

I find it exciting to have access to the teaching of a top Grammy-winning guitarist like Jason Vieaux. It’s great to have his teaching videos available day or night and also to have the opportunity to get individual feedback from him.

If you’re looking for online guitar lessons that are available on your schedule, I recommend that you check out Jason Vieuax’s course in ArtistWorks.
